Initial Teacher Training
What is schools direct?
School Direct Training at Hatton Teaching School Alliance is led by Sir Christopher Hatton Academy, who are proud to be Wellingborough’s first high performing converter academy, awarded Outstanding by Ofsted in January 2015. Our sustained success is based on our mission to aim for excellence in all that we do and encourage others to do the same.
The academic elements of the training course are provided by the University of Leicester, the University of Northampton and the University of Bedfordshire. The University sessions are taught by experienced academics, who are leaders in their field, combining teaching experience with leading academic and pedagogic knowledge.
How is the course structured?
The course runs for one-year and as well as developing knowledge of academic principles and theories behind teaching, it also develops subject based knowledge through University taught modules. This combines with practical teaching experience in at least two different settings, allowing you to learn both from experienced academics and experienced teachers.
What support will I get throughout my training year?
You will be allocated a school-based mentor who will ensure that you feel supported during your training, and gives you a point of contact and a point of reference during your training. We hold regular meetings with all our School Direct trainees, giving them the opportunity to compare experiences, and learn from other trainees during the year, who may be in different schools or teaching a different age group to you.
Our school-based professional tutor provides a comprehensive in-school training programme, covering a range of issues, including lesson structure and marking, but also wider issues such as e-safety and anti-bullying and how they will impact on your practice.
Our School Direct trainees have consistently high rates of employment and have found us to be supportive and friendly during their intensive training year. By the end of the course you will not only be awarded Qualified Teacher status, but will also be fully prepared to join the teaching profession in your Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year.
